Hi Jack et al: Ok, the fink lammpi_7.0.6-11 package in a clean /sw works.
If I try to install lammpi 7.1.1 with fink (same package, just changed the version number and md5sum), it does not.
If I install lammpi 7.1.1 with DarwinPorts, it works, BUT it lacks the fortran bindings.
I think I have satisfied my curiosity now. Since a working lammpi_7.0.6-11 exists in the debian binary fink distribution, I would say don't touch anything, and if anyone runs into my problem, tell them to install the binary
