While trying to clear up some disk space, I mistakenly deleted the contents of /sw/var/cache (meant to empty /sw/var/ccache). After that, I found that scanpackages failed with this error, among others:
E: Archive directory /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/partial is missing. The trivial workaround was sudo mkdir -p /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/partial It certainly seems reasonable that apt should auto-create that directory as needed.
