FWIW, in my case this allowed me to run xdrawchem:

bash-3.2$ sudo apt-get remove x-ghostscript-fonts
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
   x-ghostscript-fonts xfig
