If your apple is fully installed, you should see the virtual for it,
just like on 10.4.

Do you still have the fink xorg or xfree86 installed by any chance?
That would stop Fink from looking for Apple's...

Apple's X11 is radically different now; apps can be started right from
the terminal and the X server autolaunches through launchd.
