David, Just to give you a heads up, progress is slowly being made to resolve the issues in gmp 4.3.0 on i386-apple-darwin9. This is in the thread....
http://gmplib.org/list-archives/gmp-bugs/2009-May/001419.html The current svn of gmp 4.3.0 with patches builds fine with gcc-4.2/g++-4.2 but has issues with the gcc-4.0/g++-4.0 in Xcode 3.1.2 (duplicate symbols in the shared lib linkage). Unfortunately upstream doesn't test with the newer Xcode releases but sticks with Xcode 2.4.1 for his builds so these issues aren't seen by him directly. Hopefully the problem with gcc-4.0/g++-4.0 will be resolved but we might consider building on 10.5/10.6 with gcc-4.2/g++-4.2 in any case since that version groks -mtune=core2 and should provide more accurate tuning for gmp's code.
