???  This is totally unclear to me.  How are you _not_ building Fink's
gnuplot if you're building another Fink package and it's being dragged
in as a dependency?  What do you mean by "within the fink gnome
terminal"?  Is that the ultimate package you're building?  The ultimate
package is irrelevant.  Only the package that is currently failing
should matter (along with any dependencies that got misbuilt along the way)

More to the point, gnuplot shouldn't be using TeX at all.  I thought I
rigged it not to do so.  Maybe send _me_ the message, since I'm the
maintainer for gnuplot, and Robert isn't.

As I said, it works here.  ptex-base might work better for you.
