JF,
  Okay. I was afraid that the binutils package was building
an as or ld, but it doesn't seem to do that (at least on
powerpc). We have to be really careful though that this
doesn't accidentally happen in some future binutils update
while it installs directly into %p.
               Jack
ps The package desc seems to indicate that it expected to
build as and ld though.
