huh - this is the error i see under 10.7 with Perl 5.12.3:

that seems like an upstream bug.  i've opened 
https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=86196 to track it.

i don't have a 10.6 system handy for testing, so the solution there may have to 
be just removing 10.6 from the list of supported distributions for that package.
