Unfortunately, I don't have a solution, but I do note that I compiled and installed fink's ncurses 5.2-6, and fink's readline and readline-shlibs 4.2a-4. I got my XFree86 4.2 from XDarwin, though, not from fink. I also think I remember a glitch while readline went from a single package to separate readline and readline-shlibs; perhaps forcing a rebuild on that package (or those) packages will help.
