You've almost got everything, as long as you don't have any X-dependent
packages installed.

You'll need to do:
rm -rf /Applications/XDarwin.app
as well, because fink won't do the overwriting for you.

Fink will ask you to install xfree86-base, which you also need, so you
should agree to this.
