To change the font of an X application (such as xterm and many others), I do the following:
First choose a font from the list produced by xlsfonts (you can look at the man page), such as
-adobe-new century schoolbook-medium-r-normal--25-180-100-100-p-136-iso8859-4
Then I call the x application with the option -fn to specify the font, as in
xterm -fn "-adobe-new century schoolbook-medium-r-normal--25-180-100-100-p-136-iso8859-4" &
The hard part is finding a font that really looks good. For that, it can be helpful to first look at
xfd -fn "-adobe-new century schoolbook-medium-r-normal--25-180-100-100-p-136-iso8859-4"
which displays the whole font set.
Hope this helps,
Jens

I don't know if this is off topic or not, but how can I change fonts in X? I want to be able to use Verdana when I'm using Galeon, or Mozilla.
