Hey Everyone, Ok, I want to go for it. I spoke to Jocelyn at Ximian, and asked her flat out - how many product sales would have to be in it for you guys to decide to develop the connector for OS X. She said 500.
So, I know there are risks, but I would like to it upon myself to shop this idea around the various popular lists & forums to see how many people I can find who a) claim to be interested, and b) would be willing to commit to buying the thing up front if that's what it takes to get them to do it. Note that if I did this, I'd be very clear about the fact that Evolution for X itself is not actually supported, and that most likely, this whole thing would only be available via fink, so if you're not up to that, it isn't for you. The obvious catch is of course that despite warnings, this would conceivably create a lot of users who want support for Evolution, for a platform on which Ximian doesn't provide it. Those people will probably come here for that support, if they can find us. So, I'd like to put it to a vote: Who thinks this is worth doing, and it won't be that hard to explain to people up front that they product they would be buying is a component of another product which is completely unsupported? Who thinks this would become a huge pain in the a$$ for Max and anyone else who's helping w/ the Evloution port, would in general cause a level of headaches that we don't want around here, and would prefer that I didn't do this? I suspect there are two ways we could go about this - either keep the Evo port strictly part of the fink project, meaning the only ways to install it is either through fink, or building it on your own, or have someone put together a bundle & osx-like installer that puts it (and X11) in place real easy-like, for "normal" OSX users. The former helps keep this limited to people who can solve a lot of their own problems. The latter helps find a wider audience. -Avram _______________________________________________________________ Have big pipes? SourceForge.net is looking for download mirrors. We supply the hardware.
