I was messing with postgresql and hit a few snags. I'm not sure which
are due to my ignorance of postgres and which have to do with how fink
installs. I'm more or less just trying to cut and paste commands from
the setup in order to get a test database going. I'm pretty sure I
could figure it all out, but I suspect I could get there way faster
with some help.

Among the things I don't understand are:

What the daemonic command does. The docs said that I could issue the
daemonic command so that the database(s) ?? would startup on
start-up. I did so, but I hardly ever take the machine down so I'm not
sure what else is required.

How to give the commands without getting zapped by the shell taking
ampersands as escapes. A lot of the examples have the ' >logfile.log
2>&1' construct to capture both stdout and stderr to the logfile. With
the tcsh (default on OS X) shell this blows up in my face. [Yes
switching to sh first works.]

The user pgsql, which is the user postgres in most docs (why
different?), does not have a home directory. So if I try to become the
user for more than a single command, I get an error message.

My goals are really lame here. Simply to have a test databse
accessible from my desktop with me as the user and admin for the
test database (though not for anything else). Just want to mess with
the Perl DBDs and DBIs, and try to Created and Drop a few tables and
stuff for testing. And to see what it takes to tie a web page.

Though for tonight I'd settle for: Here's the commands to get
PostgreSQL, create a database, access a database, backup or save a
database, remove it, and start over.
