Martin,

I tried everything I could think of, fsck, diskwarrior, reinstall fink.
but the problem wouldn't go
away. Finally I got a spare hard drive and did a clean install of OSX 10.1.
5 and only installed Dev tools and fink. Fortunately, XFree86 built fine
on the clean system. So apparently my main HD OSX has some weird system
corruption problem that only shows up when building XFree but is not
fixible with any of the standard tools.

Thanks for the help.

I guess I have to do a clean install of my main HD now.
