John, I assume you are not talking about MySQL root. MySQL, as well as many other database, has its own user management system, which is confusing to new MySQL admins. If I am correct, your problem has nothing to do with MySQL. You just need to set root password for the OS. I do not know the instructions you mentioned. The ones that should work are in http://macosx.org/rootpass.html.
