Which flavour of Emacs are you using? If you're using Emacs 20
under X window, then things should be fine with fonts like
10x20.
OTOH, all the native GUI flavors that I've tried to use under
Acqua weren't able to display accented chars (like ����� --
they only show as squares). :-(
I haven't tried fink's emacs-carbon yet, though.
Anyway, this obviously makes it very hard for me to use a
native version of Emacs for typing my work.

P.S.: How do I get a forward delete to work with the ibook keyboard? I
already tried fn+delete (like I saw documented on some homepages), but
all I got was a backspace. :-(
