You need to do two things:
First, redirect the DISPLAY variable in the remote machine to the machine where you want the output of your application, i.e., your local machine. The syntax is export DISPLAY=my.local.ip.address:0.0 or something like that for the bash shell
Second, authorize the remote machine to open windows in the local machine. You can do this with xauth or xhost. The second alternative is not recommended because is VERY insecure. Check the man pages of these two to see how to do it or read the corresponding HOWTO at www.linuxdoc.org (I think the title is something like running X apps remotely).
One last thing, your X server on the local machine has to be configured so it listens for incoming connections on the TCP port. By default, lots of distributions disable this. I don't remember the exact file where this is set (I think is one of these Xserver files or xdm). The option is -tcpnolisten. You can make a grep of the directory where your X11 configuration is stored (usually something like /sw/etc/X11/....) and delete that option.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

I apologize for the off topic post, but I thught someone could give me help. We are having trouble getting our Unix machines to recognize the X11 windows from OSX. So i can say telnet into the machine (either a Sun or an SGI), can give regular commands, but if I try running Nedit say, it gives an error that it can't open the display. I have tried changing the display setting in the environment to what I thought would be correct, but with no success.
Any suggestions appreciated.
