Sorry my previous email wasn't clear. Here is an attempt to be
clearer, but please let me know if I still haven't provided all the
necessary info (if so, I apologize in advance --)
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

o On Solaris 2.7, I read/send email using vm 6.96 running under
xemacs-21.1.14 This has worked stably for several years
o From Dec 2001 until recently, I was able to copy my Solaris vm
INBOX to my Mac OS X laptop (which ran vm/xemacs under XDarwin), and
thus use email, operating on my INBOX with vm, in the same way as on
my Solaris box. This was true for Mac OS X 10.1.0 through 10.1.4.
-- XDarwin was installed (compiled) on OS X via fink
-- xemacs was installed (compiled) on OSX via fink.
-- the INBOX was copied from Solaris to OS X using rsync
-- the hardware is Powerbook G3 500 MHz, 256 MB RAM
Unfortunately I don't remember what version of xemacs/vm I was using
successfully on OS X 10.1, because I recently upgraded to OS X
10.2.1 on that laptop, and that's when my problem started.
o Since upgrading to 10.2.1 (around 8/24/2002), vm/xemacs on OS X is
no longer able to correctly read an INBOX copied from Solaris:
-- I *am* able to use vm/xemacs on OS X 10.2.1 to receive/send email
-- An INBOX created entirely by vm/xemacs on OS X 10.2.1 will be
correctly re-read after a save and exit of xemacs.
-- However, if I copy over an INBOX from Solaris, the INBOX
shows up in vm/xemacs on OS X with only *some* of the
emails that I can see in the INBOX on Solaris, i.e., many
of the emails are missing
-- I've tried copying the INBOX from Solaris via scp and sftp
(instead of rsync), with no difference in results
-- if I copy the INBOX back from OS X to Solaris (using sftp),
I can read it perfectly under vm/xemacs on Soalris, so
there doesn't appear to be a file transfer problem in
either direction.
-- This same behavior also occurs on a newer laptop which came
presinstalled with OS X 10.2, which I upgraded to 10.2.1,
and on which I built a completely new 10.2 fink
installation, followed by XDarwin and xemacs.
-- The system is: OS X 10.2.1, TiBook G4 800 MHz, 1 Gb RAM
-- Version info is:
> fink --version:
Package manager version: 0.11.0
Distribution version: 0.4.9.cvs
> fink info fink
pkg fink version ###
pkg fink version 0.11.0-1
> fink info xfree86-rootless:
pkg xfree86-rootless: version ###
pkg xfree86-rootless: version 4.2.0.1-2
-- I looked on the fink mailing list archives as well as the
gnu.emacs.vm.info archives but didn't find any discussion
of such behavior. On fink-users, there has been discussion
of various fixes to other problems in xemacs (a reftex
problem) so I tried those fixes, as described next.
-- The vm/xemacs behavior described above occurs on the TiBook
with both xemacs-21.5.9-1 and xemacs-21.4.9, each built
with either the xemacs-sumo-pkg-20020720 or the
xemacs-sumo-pkg-2000919. I've tried all four combinations.
These various versions and combinations were discussed on
fink-users as solutions to an xemacs reftex problem. The
vm version running within these xemacsen is 7.07
-- as far as error messages go: xemacs-21.5.9-1 says "unable
to attach shm_segment" when I launch it, but xemacs-21.4.9
doesn't give that error message. When I start vm within
xemacs, xemacs-21.5.9-1 sometimes says "garbage detected at
end of file" but I am not sure if this always happens, the
messages flash by pretty fast in the xemacs command line.
With xemacs-21.4.9 I don't think I see this message, but
again, things flash by pretty quickly in the xemacs command
line.
-- I don't know if xemacs/vm write an error log, and couldn't
find any info on error logs on either gnu.emacs.vm.info
archives or the comp.emacs.xemacs archives.
So, my question is, can anyone suggest what might enable vm-7.07 on OS
X 10.2.1 to read all of an INBOX copied over from vm-6.96 on Solaris?
Thanks in advance --
