I figured it was just PRAM corruption due to 2 reasons: the date was wrong,
and *nothing* was repaired except for resetting Startup Disk. BTW, thanks
for reading the whole description! :)

With the list of problems at the end, another storm came through last night.
The power flickered again, but the computer did not turn off. I managed to
shut it down myself before 2 more flickers happened. When I turned it on
this morning, it booted at normal speed (for verbose mode) and came up as it
should.

The slow-app-on-first-launch has been fixed, along with the Vendetta hanging
problem. The screens in JK2 demo are still stretched out, and there is still
2-3 seconds of HD activity (that was not present before) when going to
sleep. Those problems are minor, however, and if they don't imply further
problems, I'm OK just to ignore them.
