The bug was actually in Quartz in 10.2.1 and earlier; Quartz was initializing automatically that it wasn't supposed to be, according to the API. When they fixed the bug, it broke code that didn't properly initialize the cursor in the first place, which is why the fix is backwards-compatible. The code in X is now fixed to do it the way it was supposed to anyways, it just used to be a grey area before that worked anyways.

Regarless, the fix is to update to X 4.2.1.1, but we can't help you with Office, looks like they did it wrong too. :P
