Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I tracked down a note in the Nedit archives that suggests the problem is
with Lesstif-0.93.36 and suggests using Lesstif-0.93.0. I gave this a try
but ran into a number of errors when trying to recompile Nedit.

I've also tried compiling with OpenMotif3. With OpenMotif the File->Open
stuff seemed to work for me, but I found that when I clicked the close
button in the window manager, the whole application would quit. That
behavior was more annoying than the Lesstif behavior, so I went back to
Lesstif.
