Yes I did make that error, though only on my second try. It turns out
that the Makefile needed to be updated to work with xsltproc, which is
the only xml processing program that I know fink installs. 

I was informed on the docbook-apps list that the distribution's
makefile  has been updated and is in cvs on sourceforge. Due to
problems with CVS at sourceforge at the moment, that others mentioned
on this list, it will be a day or two before I can check it out. After
that I will let you know how it works.
