You can indeed run alongside Aqua.

1)  Start XDarwin in rootless mode.
2)  Once KDE starts, get into the Desktop settings, either from the
desktop menu bar, if it's turned on, or Control Center.
3)  Select Behavior, then turn off Enable Icons on Desktop.
