That seems to have worked, but when it goes to update a package
(after running update-all as suggested), I get this:

I tried updating another package an got a similar response. I
tried a third (xpilot) and it seemed to compile okay, but at the end I
got:

sudo cp /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status-old /sw/var/lib/dpkg/status
and then try updating again.
