No, you shouldn't need to.
My suspicion is maybe something doesn't like some of the shell code. If you don't mind, please try a 'fink selfupdate-cvs' and install system-xfree86 again, I've just updated unstable with a newer version that's hopefully fixed it. If not, let me know and we'll work it out.
