A little wrinkle in the Fink docs. If you go in the "front door" at
sourceforge (http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php) you get a
recommendation to start with the Fink 0.5.1 binary installer. I did
so (on OS X 10.2.4 with Apple's X11 beta3), and got a mostly working
Fink, but with the problem that it contained a broken gnuplot (a
version 3.8h that would not process files in batch mode).

After some googling I discovered the page

http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/jaguar.php

which gave different advice, to use the Fink 0.11.1 source as a
starting point for OS X 10.2. I followed the update procedure
specified there, and this resulted in the installation of a version of
gnuplot (3.8i.0-2) which works correctly.
