I have dlcompat 20030629-3 (and -dev and -shlibs) installed.
I'm using Fink's X. I recently, to clear away some older debris, removed /usr/X11R6 and reinstalled the xfree package from fink. I have since rebuilt dlcompat and a good portion of Evolution's dependencies - still no go.
To recap, part of the error message is:
"Gnome-VFS: unable to load module (null):"
Seems like it should be displaying the name of the failing module. Are there any other apps that would use the gnome-vfs libraries that I could try out? Would it make a difference that I'm using the -ssl flavors of the gnome-vfs packages?

The SSL flavor shouldn't be a problem. I run it on my system (gnome-vfs-ssl, and XFree86 4.3). I've not seen anything like your error.
