I had the same problem (with the same setup-i.e., OS 10-2-8, fink 0.16.0-1, unstable tree) initially. However, took the update piece by piece, ordering on the basis of which seemed more basic than the next. It was tedious (and took lots of time), but all is currently up-to-date with no errors.
I started with the X-free stuff, went to the gnome pieces and so on.
