In a perfect world, everything that's in fink automatically does the right thing when configure runs. The reality is quite different. Many software developers make assumptions about things they shouldn't.

Many things will still work, many things won't. I ran fink on panther for 2 months before there was a panther release; if you're not afraid to hack on info files it's possible to make anything work.

There's a difference between that, and a supportable release.
