Regarding your questions,

"which uname" gives me "/usr/bin/uname".

Running "uname" gives me "Darwin".

I also tried "fink rebuild dpkg" It did a whole bunch
of compiles, and then the same error. "package

Look into the config.log file in the dpkg build directory /sw/src/dpkg-*** for a line containing "checking Debian architecture". Are there error messages afterwards?


From looking at the dpkg configure script, the wrong architecture could be taken when your "awk" binary reacts in a non-standard way. What kind of awk or gawk do you have?
