The meat of my email is that the fink installed version of sshd seems to have a problem with Panther passwords. As circuitous as my installation may be, it was working under 10.2.8 - and was working under Panther (10.3.1) until I rebuilt my password.
Has anyone on this list experienced a similar problem? I'd recommend against duplicating this with a live account - perhaps someone could create a new user in Panther and attempt an ssh login (even a simple loopback). Perhaps what I think is a defect is really just a configuration problem with my installation.

password, after installing panther (passwd), I could no longer log-in

typing the proper password (and even changing the password), I enabled
root logon (dangerous, but required for diagnostics). root's password
was not upgraded - and I could successfully log on using the fink built
sshd. Running against the Apple provided sshd, I could log on with both
accounts - no problems. I attempted to recompile openssh under panther,
but this did not help.
I'm not sure if this is a widely known problem - or even if is confined
to just my machine) - but thought that I'd share.
