/sw/bin/tar /usr/bin/tar
so I deleted the /sw/bin/tar and everything seems to be working great now...

Type "where tar" if you are using tcsh, or "type -a tar" if you are using bash.
This shows all possible candidates. I don't know which one is executed by dpkg. Since it is giving you a bus error, you can perhaps find a crash report in ~/Library/Logs somewhere.
