I don't know how but I was able to solve this problem. I did not change any of the configuration files. All I did was that I unchecked the box in the window with "Kandalf's tips" that pops up after kde has launched. So is does not appear anymore. Somehow I was able to do so - don't know why. Now everything works fine. I also recognized that a kde process was hanging in a loop (I saw this in the xterm window in the background - perhaps there is a connection between my problem and this loop).
Another question: what's the sense of: export KDEWM=/sw/bin/kwin?
