Sorry for answering my own post, but I have some new information.

I had errors yesterday when I tried to run selfupdate-rsync, so I ran
selfupdate-cvs, thinking that it wouldn't matter which update method I
used.

But right after I sent the message below, I ran selfupdate-rsync
successfully, and it seemed to find new packages to update, so perhaps the
CVS servers are not as up-to-date as the rsync servers ... ???

Anyway, fink is now in the process of recompiling a bunch of packages on
which tetex depends.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
