Dear people,

It seems that tar cannot untar some of the tar-files that fink downloads when it updates itself. There has been a post on the fink beginners list about this problem with unzip550.tar. It occurs with other tar files as well. Here is what happens when I try to untar audiofile-0.2.3.tar

boskoop:/sw/src# /sw/bin/tar xf audiofile-0.2.3.tar
Bus error

With Apple's tar there are no problems:
boskoop:/sw/src# /usr/bin/tar xf audiofile-0.2.3.tar
boskoop:/sw/src#

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Maybe it's dependent on the machine; I am using a powerbook G3 (bronze keyboard).

Is this related to the bus error that fileutils (e.g. ls) generated due to something in gettext ? (See http://homepage.mac.com/sao1/fink/finpan.html#top23)

This problem only occurred after the selfupdate.

Here are the versions I use:
fink 0.17.1, using the unstable branch
tar 1.13.25-11
OS X 10.2.8

Bye,
Lorenz

The more clearly I try to say it, the more difficulty I have finding
words. This seems to me a typical symptom of something or other...
