I tried to do the fetch of the mirrors. An ideas on how to overcome this "no matching version found for fink"?

You need to do a selfupdate that gets you a package description for fink-mirrors. I don't know how you were able to get fink version 0.17.3.1 without at the same time obtaining a package description for fink-mirrors. Usually if you do a selfupdate, you first get all the package descriptions, and only then fink and friends are updated. Did you do "fink update fink", perhaps?

/usr/bin/sudo /sw/bin/fink fetch fink-mirrors

It thinks that fink-mirrors is a kind of weird version of fink, because it doesn't know that there is a package named fink-mirrors.

Of course, if you have fink-0.17.3.1 installed without fink-mirrors, you are in a bad shape, because all the mirror lists are missing. I don't know what advice to give you to get out of this situation, because I don't understand how you got into it in the first place.
