Hello Fink Community.

As I have stated numerous times before, I think that Fink has a great community. Unfortunately I would like to be much more involved into it, than I am right now. This is partly because I am curious, on the the other hand I simply want to get to know those better who enjoy using Fink. So while I am working on a Fink community web-site I thought about having a little experiment.

Fink already has a so called IRC channel on irc.freenode.net. It is called #fink, yet often people that hang out there are very involved with either porting applications and thus ask for help or involved with the development of fink.

I opened another channel, it is called #finksters and you can also find it on irc.freenode.net. I will be waiting there, maybe some of you have the time to sit and chat for a while. If you do not know what IRC is or how it works on a Macintosh, then please review http://irchelp.org/ specifically http://irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/ and http://irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html will make it easier on you.

My vision is a very simple one, while Email and Forums are great, I do like to have real time interaction and for that IRC is a very good medium. I would be delighted to see this channel grow and prosper, not as a source for technical information, but as a place where fellow "finksters" can meet, talk to each other, exchange tips or maybe speak about those things they would like to see improved in Fink.

A word of warning though. I see this as an experiment and I know that after this mail has reached the mailing list there will not be an influx of a hundred people. The channel might be very empty and it depends on your willingness to stick around and simply sit there until it picks up. This can take hours, days or weeks. I only know, that I will most likely be there whenever I am on line and I am happy to talk to those who join for a bit. Bring your friends, spread the word, hopefully it will be a first step to bringing the Fink community even more tightly together. I would enjoy that and it would make for an even better Two Zero Zero Four experience.

The network you should be joining is called Freenode, you may connect to irc.freenode.net (or irc.ipv6.freenode.net if you have IPv6) and the channel I am waiting in is #finksters.

I'll be looking forward to meeting you

Sincerely yours

PR Dude for Fink
