As for Gnome, I've got it installed but I can't seem to find
instructions on
how to find it (I admit I may be being old and blind), could anyone out
there give me a pointer or two?
It depends on the version: for GNOME 1.x, you can use
exec quartz-wm --only-proxy & exec gnome-session
For GNOME 2.x (relevant if you happen to be on OS 10.2.x or for the archives when it gets released for 10.3.x) you need to call a window manager:
exec quartz-wm --only-proxy & exec metacity & exec gnome-session
<snip>
I've Gnome 1.4 installed. Unfortunately neither of these ways works, X11
bounces a bit and disappears as it has always done when trying to start
Gnome. I got the Gnome splash screen once... But then it died with X11,
bummer.
Check and see what version of sawfish you have (e.g. via "fink list").
Would there be anything useful in the system logs do you think? What sort of
error should I look for if I do trawl through them? Which specific system
log should I be looking at? Is there an X11 log, I can't see one? Do I need
to turn on X11 logging? How do I do that..?
Run the Console utility (under Applications/Utilities). X11 startup stuff gets thrown over to the console log.
*William takes a breath*
OK, I know that's a lot, but I'm relatively new to this side of the Mac and
really want to learn, and I promise that as soon as I know enough and have
answers for other people's problems I'll start answering as well as asking
:)
Thank you all again
