The purge bit didn't work,
do you mean that the purge command gave an error, or do you mean that the purge command went through but the problem was still there?
I got a message No Files to Be Purged and the problem was still there.

A remark on those instructions:
Download the nicotine.info file and put it in /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/net/
If you do this, it will get wiped out the next time you do a selfupdate-rsync.
