After lots of difficulties, I decided on one last reinstall of fink. So, I installed the binary package. After that, I did:

>> sudo fink scanpackages; sudo fink index

After that was done, I did:

>> sudo fink selfupdate (and chose rsync method)

After this, I am left with the following version:

>> fink -V

Package manager version: 0.18.2
Distribution version: 0.6.2.cvs

So, it is time to install some software, so I type:

>> sudo fink install gimp tetex octave maxima g77 cdrtools amaya xmahjongg freeciv gnupg lincity xmms gnucash anacron atlas

It runs through the dependencies and asks me a few questions; I choose all defaults. Then, I let it do its thing and I leave my office. I come back the next morning and it exited with errors. Here is what it tells me:

/bin/mkdir -p /sw/src/date-manip-pm-5.40-2

It should be noted that I am in stable only. Here are my machine specs:
PowerBook G4 / 400 MHz / 640 MB SDRAM
Mac OS X 10.3.2 Build 7D24

If you wish to see the full output (in case it is needed)(full as in everything it done for my last command), I attached it to this email in a bzip2 archive. Thanks again for your help. I would also like to know where to start from again (do I type in the same command, should I nuke /sw/ and start over again).
