I've had problems recently with X11:

I was trying to install fink and maybe messed a few things. to fix that i erased all reference to x11, even the install receipt (incl /usr/X11 etc).

i downloaded x11 from apple, reinstalled, and when i try to run it i get a xwin server running full screen for a second or so and then nothing. and no x11 crash log...

besides, when i run startx from the command line here is what i get:

[02:44:34] : startx

XFree86 Version 4.3.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) _XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root [DRI] screen 0 installation complete Screen 0 added: 800x600 @ (0,0)

waiting for X server to shut down Quitting XDarwin...

when i'm pretty sure i erased XDarwin as well...

what's going on here ???

i'd love hints on how to go back to a clean install to have things running the way they used to. not matter if it's xdarwin instead of x11 that runs.

What's happening looks like a window manager isn't being called.

Do you have a .xinitrc file in your home directory? If so, then delete it.

If not, then see what's in /usr/X11R6/etc/xinit/xinitrc.

*I* don't have an etc directory in /ust/X11R6. Should I?
