I have a interesting problem. I'n not going to get too detailed here but basically here is what I need to do.
( I thought I would ask here, since I asked my local Mac group and they are all Mac heads with no Linux/Unix/X experience and I drew a blank. )
I have a "box" I need to communicate with from my iBook. Fink installed, Apple's X11 and also Xfree86 installed.
Umm techically no. You can't have both Apple's X11 and XFree86 simultaneously operating, as they both install in the same directory tree (with some minor differences).
You may have the XDarwin server application on top of your Apple X11, or something like that, and I'm a bit surprised that this even works.
Basically I need to telnet to the IP address of this box and get a running X session going to get a remote X gui going on.
I can start either flavor of X, get my term, telnet, connect, and the "box" spits out X Server not found.
Anyone of you guru's know how to let the "box" get into my X session??
The secure way to do it is for your "box" to have sshd running, and have X11 forwarding turned on in its sshd_config file. Then you can start your X server on the Mac, log in to the "box" with "ssh -X <hostname of box>". This will automatically redirect the X display of the "box" to your Mac.
A less secure way would be to run "xhost +<box's hostname>" on your Mac (which lets the "box" use your Mac's X display), telnet in as you've been doing, then run "setenv DISPLAY <your Mac's IP address>:0" on the "box" (which tells the "box" where to send its output).
Thanks!
