Hello,
When trying to install any crypto package (lynx-ssl,
svn-ssl, etc.), I see that they all depend on OpenSSL.
OpenSSL is already installed on Panther, so I'm not
sure why do I need to install it from fink too and end
up with two OpenSSL installations. Is there any
system-openssl package that I'm missing? How hard
would it be to create one?

OpenSSL is a security critical application. Security updates take Apple usually a rather long time and historically there was no OpenSSL if I recall correctly. That is why we choose to supply our own OPenSSL. But since Max is the maintainer I am sure he can explain this better to you
