Well, it helped a little. I added a " &" after the "quartz-wm" and now the splash screen gets to the 5th icon when loading the gnome window manager before it quits and gives me:
There was an error starting GNOME Setting Daemon.
        Some things such as . . . not work correctly.
        The Setting Daemon restarted too many times.
        The last error message was:
        Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon'
        GNOME will try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

I have also set up X11 to start Gnome or KDE with the following commands : gnome xinit ~/.xinitrc.gnome --/usr/X11
Unfortunately there is more to this command which I cannot access.
