However, if I move /usr/local.temp back to /usr/local, it still works but the splash screen is blank (except for the "Creating main gui" line at the bottom) and I get a whole lot of messages telling me about the conflicting versions of libpng as pasted below. In some ways I guess I could put up with this, but it is a bit messy - I'm not sure how to tell it to use the correct libpng version that fink installed, instead of the one in /usr/local/... My /usr/local wasn't in place at compile time.
Anyway, here is the error output I'm getting when I run bluefish with /usr/local in place:

the dir_icon and unknown_icon items in the config file are invalid fungus:~ orlovich$
As I said, it still works but the splash screen is empty.
If I move /usr/local out of the way to run bluefish, it works with no messages to the terminal at all. Note in both cases, /usr/local was not in place during compile.
Any suggestions now?
