Hello,

when trying to run rsync to transfer the whole fink installation (under
/sw) froma PB to an iMac, I have seen there are a few files or
directories under certain packages that may result unreadable, at least
to an unpriviledged user. A quick "find" turns up the following files or
directories in the emacs, xemacs, and docbook packages:

drwxr--r-- 4 root admin 136 Jan 13 11:41
./share/emacs/21.3.50/leim/ja-dic
drwxr--r-- 112 root admin 3808 Jan 13 11:41
./share/emacs/21.3.50/leim/quail

-rw------- 1 root admin 10715 Oct 1 2002
./lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/fsf-compat/timer.el

-rw------- 1 root admin 4404 Feb 16 10:04
./share/doc/ghostscript-fonts/ChangeLog

The following is just an example: all files under
/sw/share/sgml/dtd/docbook/[2-4].[01]/ have similar permissions:

-rw-r----- 1 root admin 4298 Sep 24 2003
./share/sgml/dtd/docbook/4.1/iso-tech.gml
[...]

And then:
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 4810 Sep 8 2003
./share/sgml/entities/iso8879/iso-num.gml
[...]

So my question is: is this normal? For example, I can't see why the
directory quail under emacs should be set 744? This is not the case
under other emacs installations, as far as I can see. Same for docbook.

Btw, lock files under /sw/var are as follows:

/apt/archives/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 0 Dec 15 2002 ./var/lib/apt/lists/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 0 Sep 30 2002 ./var/lib/dpkg/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root admin 0 Feb 18 2003 ./var/lib/dpkg/methlock
but this looks normal(?).

I'd appreciate any enlightment, thanks.

        Ettore
