Thanks for the answer, but I don't think it has anything to do
with fonts preference. I have tried several combinations of fonts
and font sizes, with no effect.

Well, let's say I'm basic. Something related to fonts? applesystemfonts, or so?

I just had a little bit of success to get SOME bold fonts. In the Firefox font panel, there was no specific font chosen for serif, sans-serif, or monospace. When I changed the serif font to "Century Schoolbook", I started getting bold fonts.

The catch, the font size needs to be at least 17 (I'm on a 20" Cinema Display) before I can see the bold. If I try any other font (like Times, Courier, Lucida, Comic Sans) at any size, I never see the bold. Only Century Schoolbook works.

Also, I installed applesystemfonts and xft2-dev and rebuilt all of firefox before testing the bolding again, so I'm not sure which of the 3 changes actually made a difference. The bad part is, of course, that only one font works and not always.

Michle, what are your font settings in Mozilla? And have you tried building Firefox to see if you also get bold with it? Its dependencies are a subset of Mozilla's, so it shouldn't take long to build and test.

We're all running Apple's X11, so at least that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I'm going to try and install mozilla-1.7.5-1. Here's the list of dependencies that I don't have. Except for freetype2, none of them seem important for font drawing (and when I was packaging firefox, having freetype2 around didn't do anything for me). So I'm not sure which missing dependency (if that is indeed the issue) is affecting the font display.
