I ran into the need of installing cctools 528 with the disk image provided by the gnu web sire when installing g95. I took this chance
to first install XCode 1.5 (I previously had 1.2), then the november 2004 gcc updater and finally cctools 528. This last step happened to remove my /dev/null, as it was reported on some gcc mailing list in december 2004. After recreating it with the workaround advertised
in thw list I ran into the same cpp configure problem, which however happens with ANY package, or at least with most of them.
Please find attached a config.log hopefully explaining some more: it's about the gnome-desktop package.

configure:3752: gcc -E -no-cpp-precomp -I/sw/include conftest.c
cc1: Device not configured: when writing output to distcc[7993] ERROR: compile (null) on localhost failed
The second line here is the error. I have no idea what it really means, but the "device not configured" seems to indicate that something else than /dev/null was also removed. Several others have the same error. I still think (until someone says otherwise) that this problem goes away by rebooting.
