This happened only because I had moved the src directory to an external hard drive in order to save room on my laptop. Could this requirement be relaxed for the src folder? Or could this check be removed from the fink update process?
As the FAQ says:
...then you need to run Get Info on the drive/partition where Fink is installed and unselect the "Ignore ownership" button.
There is no problem to have Fink on an external hard drive. You just have to set your external hard drive up correctly. This is required by other applications as well: If you do a backup to the external drive, for example, and forget to unselect the "Ignore ownership" button, you can throw the backup copy away. It is a pity that Apple put the default as it is now. From a Unix point of view, it is the wrong default.
