I fear that I know too little about sound hardware to be much use, but here is a problem that affects certainly the command line sound tools in fink, and possibly other things as well, though I haven't had time to test.
mpg123 plays mp3 files too fast. From what testing I could do, the problem comes in two forms. Some play as if sung by Mikey Mouse. I assume those lack particular header information. Others sound much more normal, just slightly faster and higher than they should be. It looks as if the sound is being sent to the sound system at a rate of 44100, whereas the system expects 48000. Now for the part I really can't explain. If I specifiy the proper rate to mpg123 with the -r option, the mp3 is played at the correct pitch and speed, but there is a huge amount of static. I'm running on an iMac G5. I hope that makes some sense.
